Much like most things that companies give away its probably tied to some promotional thing (for example wanting to raise consumer awareness of the charging options at Z).
I would hazard a guess and say that its likely the cost of doing something like this would be less/similar to the cost of doing a 6c/10c/12c per liter discount on petrol.
In essence its just another promotion and not all promotions are targeted at all consumers

Z moved it's EV charging from the Z EV Charging App to Z App about a week ago.
Assume this promotion is about that change, and encouraging EV owners to get the Z app (instead on the prior EV specific one).
We have seen free petrol promotions (most notably waitomo's spin to win) for to promote apps before.
But we are unlikely to ever see a free petrol / diesel promotion without a limit as the marginal cost of petrol / diesel is far too high, it pumps far to fast, and is far to easy to store, so the marketing spend would quickly get out of hand.
On marginal cost, the retail cost for Z fast charging is $0.69/kWh, marginal cost would be around $0.15/kWh so more than 3/4's of the retail price are going towards fixed costs (those DC chargers are expensive, and lines charges are substantial). With petrol I suspect the margin at the retailer is under 15%.
So if we assume an average charge rate of say 50kW over 24hrs at a marginal cost of 0.15c/kWh, that's $180 per charger for the day in free power, a reasonable amount to give away for a promo.
You can run your own numbers for an unlimited petrol promo, but it is fairly clear the cost for the promotor would become excessive fast. Also the greater value of liquid fuel (and the means to cheaply store a lot) would mean it would get out of hand super fast, and you know some people would fill up trash bags etc.
Why are ev chargers always full priced and don't get discounted like the 12c/litre offers or cheap Wednesdays? Can't say I've ever seen any company discount below standard rates on their chargers.
There are some deals around. Like Genesis having partnership with Chargenet where you can use home rates.
That is the only deal. And it's not an equivalent to the fuel per litre discounts, which almost every fuel station offers, because the genesis offer is a power company offering.
There's really nothing like the fuel per litre discounts on offer for EV drivers for their fast charging. And the reason for that being, most likely, that there aren't enough fast chargers in competition to warrant trying to get customers to use a particular brand of fast charger as opposed to another. EV drivers just kinda take what they can get, so there's no reason for discounts to be offered.
As someone else noted, this discount by Z is a promo likely specifically due to Z changing apps for Z charging.
It costs about $6 to fill my Model Y and over $150 to fill my ute. See a difference?

The free lines companies DC chargers sure got hammered, but I don't think this deal has been that widely advertised.
Z sent me an email yesterday about linking my charge fob to their new app, but made no mention of this, and I didn't hear of it until I saw it here.
and why cant they provide free fuel like this?
